The Edo State government, through the office of the Deputy Governor, Rt. Honourable Philip Shaibu, will on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 unveil and re-brand the state-owned Nigeria Women Premier League club, Edo Queens of Benin City.
The Edo State Deputy Chief of Staff, Hon. Kingsley Ehigiamusor, said on Monday in press statement that the state government has concluded plans to re-brand the state-owned women’s soccer club, Edo Queens, as it has been upgraded to a standard football club and it’s ready to be presented to the public.
“As part of the package, Edo Queens was earlier presented with a brand new 32-seater coaster bus by the state government.. In Wednesday unveiling, the team will be presented with a new five star hostel facility in a choice area in Benin City and a new salary scale that befits a professional club.”
Ehigiamusor, added that: “The unveiling of Edo Queens is the icing on the cake by the state government and the Deputy Governor for making all these possible for the girls to put them in a good place ahead of the new season.”
He also noted that, since the women’s club has been playing in the top flight Women Premier League, it is just going to be officially unveiled to the people of Edo state as a club under the supervision of the state government as one of the brands under the leadership of the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, who is saddled with the responsibility of moving sports forward in the state, with the full support of the Executive Governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki.
Edo state is gradually regaining it’s pride of place as the bedrock of Nigerian sports, as the state is set to among other things, host the next edition of the National Sports Festival, Edo 2020 next year.
Already, the Old Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, has been rebuilt into an Olympic stadium ahead of a befitting hosting of the 2020 National Sports Festival.
