Handball: Opeifa Cup begins on Monday

All is now set for the 5th edition of the Lagos State Secondary Schools Handball Championship tagged Opeifa Cup coming up from June 17 – 21 at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba.

The championship, which is for boys and girls, is one of the grassroots development programme organised by the association with the support of the sponsor, Comrade Kayode Opeifa.

Since its inception in 2015, it has served as a platform to discover and nurture talents for the state. Talented players scouted during this championship are doing the state proud at national and international youth and cadet championships.

Secretary of the association, Bintu Ojikutu stated that it was heartwarming to see Opeifa partnering with the association to help budding players’ nature their talents, assuring that this year’s championship would supersede previous editions.

“I must say that the Lagos state Handball Association is ready for this year’s Opeifa Cup. As usual, schools across the state will showcase their talents in the championship and the state coaches will have the opportunity to scout players that will be of benefit in future.

“Nothing less than 103 teams participated in the 2018 edition and this year it is expected to be more. But the organisers wishes to raise the standard of the game to ensure that the very best participate at all times,” Ojikutu added.

Last year, Zumratul Senior Secondary School came first in the Senior Boy’s category, Wesley Senior Girls were the Senior girl’s champions, Eletu Odibo emerged winners in the Junior Girls category, while Herbert Macaulay School were the Junior Boys champions.
