Uefa confirm Neymar investigation in wake of Man Utd’s PSG comeback

Uefa have confirmed they will investigate comments made by Neymar following Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League Round of 16 defeat to Manchester United last week.

Neymar called the decision to award United a late penalty “a disgrace” and questioned the authority of the VAR officials with a post on social media.

Neymar, who missed the game with a broken metatarsal, left his personal box at the Parc des Princes and stood on the touchline for the final few minutes.

The Brazilian was clearly angered by the penalty decision and took to Instagram to blast the officials after the match.

According to the Guardian, he wrote: “This is a disgrace, they put four people who know nothing about football in charge of looking at the replay for VAR.

“It’s just not possible!!! How is a guy going to hold his hand behind his back. Go f*** yourselves.”

On Wednesday, Uefa confirmed they are investigating Neymar’s comments via a statement on their website.

“A disciplinary investigation has been initiated based on Article 31(3) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations in connection with the statements made by Paris Saint-Germain player Neymar Junior following the above-mentioned match,” the statement said.

“Information in respect of this investigation will be made available in due course.”

PSG have competed in the Champions League in each of the last seven seasons but, despite their spending power, they have failed to get past the quarter-final stage.

The French champions have suffered humiliating comeback defeats in the knockout stages in two of the last three campaigns.

After winning 2-0 at Old Trafford, they were expected to overcome Manchester United this term but a 3-1 home defeat saw them eliminated.

Even more surprisingly, PSG led Barcelona 4-0 after a rampant home leg in 2016/17 only to lose 6-1 in the reverse fixture at the Nou Camp.

If Neymar is punished, he could miss the beginning of PSG’s Champions League campaign next season.
