David de Gea will become the best paid player in Premier League history if he signs a new Manchester United deal, according to reports.
The United goalkeeper is out of contract in 2020 and Old Trafford chiefs are desperate to extend his stay.
De Gea is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and has come to his side’s rescue on numerous occasions since joining in a £18.9million deal from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
The Spaniard would earn more than Paul Pogba, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.
United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has been busy tying down first-team players to new deals this season. Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw, Ashley Young, Scott McTominay, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have signed fresh terms in recent months.
And it is hoped that De Gea along with Marcus Rashford, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata will follow suit.
De Gea has made 347 appearances for United, winning every domestic honour during his eight-and-a-half-year spell.
Woodward is also looking to appoint a permanent manager and new director of football. Interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the bookmakers’ favourite for the full-time gig after winning 10 of his first 12 matches in charge.
