The Acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Coach Lawrence Iquaibom, has expressed confidence that with the calibre of players newly signed by Akwa United ahead of the new NPFL season, the club will be crowned Champions at the end of the season.
Speaking shortly after the official unveiling ceremony at the Godswill Akpabio International stadium Uyo, Iquaibom, hinted that all the 12 signings were professional footballers with experience and are ready to storm the league with the mindset of champions.
“It is a good thing that we are witnessing this ceremony today. I am confident that with this set of new players and the ones we had last season, we will win the Nigerian professional football league this season.
“All the new players signed by Akwa United ahead of the 2018/2019 season are professionals with experience and I am sure they will do their best by contributing to the success of Akwa United this season”.
Iquaibom, an Olympian who led team Akwa Ibom last month to make history and set new records at the 19th National Sports Festival in Abuja extolled the zeal and love of the state Governor, Deacon Udom Emmanuel, to sports development which according to him have made Akwa Ibom raised among States with fast and best growing sports programs.
He explained that since the emergence of Governor Udom Emmanuel, Akwa United and the entire sports sector in Akwa Ibom state has witnessed tremendous sponsorship and advancement and should be encourage by Akwa Ibom people to do more.
The two time Olympian, used the opportunity to eulogized the state commissioner for youth and sports, Sir Monday Ebong Uko, for timely interpretation of the state governors’ youth and sports development agenda.
“Let me use this opportunity to thank my commissioner for always being there for us and for interpreting the vision of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s sports vision for Akwa Ibom people “.
On the chairman of the club, the world weightlifting federation guru said” the appointment of Elder Paul Bassey, as the chairman of Akwa United and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on sports was the best for the sports sector in the state.”
He explained that Elder Paul Bassey has made Akwa United a brand in the continent by running the club professionally.
