Akanni, Siasia, Fashanu plan big for Ambode’s farewell ceremony

Top Nigerian ex-internationals led by former Flying Eagles star, Waidi Akanni, Samson Siasia, John Fashanu and Nwankwo Kanu are planning big to give the outgoing governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, a befitting farewell by the time he would be handing over power to the new governor of the state in 2019.
Akanni, who spoke on behalf of the group of ex-Super Eagles stars, said in Lagos, that, the group came together to honour the outgoing governor because of his love for sports and excellent performance as a governor where he gave a lot of attention to infrastructural development which in the long run has helped developed Lagos ahead of other states of the federation.

“We came together with the help of some sponsors like Access Bank, Sifax Group, Adron and others prospective sponsors and agreed to honour Governor Ambode with a high profile international football game tagged ‘The Match.’
“The Match is an high profile international football match that would see 21 retired top African soccer stars converge in Lagos to play in a game, whose proceeds will be used as charity to pay the school fees of children of some ex-internationals whose parents can’t afford schools due to poverty caused by premature retirement and sometimes lack of retirement plans as the case may be, but we cannot leave them to continue to suffer.”
‘The Match’, Waidi Akanni revealed has been slated to serve as the official game to open the new Onikan International Stadium in March 2019, where top stars like Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Julius Aghahowa, Joseph Yobo and host of others would play. The biggest fish among all the players that would play in ‘The Match’ is the former World Footballer of the Year and current president of Liberia, George Opong Weah, who has given his words to play in the game. The event will also be a mixture of sports and entertainment.”
Akanni, a former chairman of the Lagos State Football Association also disclosed that, multiple African Footballer of the Year, Didier Drogba, is also very eager to play in ‘The Match.’ Drogba, he noted sent his representative to observe the official press conference which took place in Lagos on Wednesday.
Akanni, who assured all the world class retired international stars of water tight security during the game which would also have Governor Ambode actively involved, revealed that, for sustenance of ‘The Match’ initiative, after Governor Ambode must have left office on May 29, 2019, the initiative will continue with other laudable projects in Nigeria.
