Akanji, 23, joined Dortmund from Basel during the January transfer window, and the centre-back has impressed during his time in the Bundesliga.
The Swiss has revealed that he is “very satisfied” at Dortmund, but has refused to hide his desire to one day represent the 20-time English champions.
Akanji told Bluewin: “Many know that Manchester United has been my favourite club since childhood. It would be nice to play there, but that’s not an issue right now. I am very satisfied in Dortmund.
“I want to win titles with BVB and compete in many more big tournaments with the Swiss national team.”
United were strongly linked with a number of central defenders during the summer transfer window, but head coach Jose Mourinho was ultimately left frustrated in his pursuit of a number of targets.
