NFF may approve Stephen Keshi Stadium for Eagles’ Afcon qualifiers

The leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation, headed by President Amaju Pinnick, is considering the approval of the newly constructed Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, to host some of the African Nations Cup qualifiers involving the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
It was gathered that the NFF president hinted a close source who prefers anonymity that the Super Eagles will play some of their Nations Cup qualification matches at the newly built Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
The Stadium which is currently hosting the 21st African Athletics Championships has one of the best playing pitches in the country at the moment with the ultra modern synthetic pitch that looks like natural grass.
Our source disclosed that as part of Delta state’s agenda to promote and develop sports from the grassroots to the top, the state got assurances from a prominent son of the state who is also the president of the Nigeria Football Federation that the Super Eagles will play some of their African Cup of Nations qualifiers at the stadium named after the late coach of the national men’s senior team, Stephen Keshi who won the African Nations Cup as a player in 1994 and a coach of the Eagles in 2013. Keshi also qualified Nigeria for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The Executive Committee members and other top officials of the NFF were on August 1, 2018 officially present at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba for the opening ceremony of the 2018 African Athletics Championship on invitation of the Sports-loving Governor of Delta State Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.
In the last few years, the Nigeria Football Federation has taken number of Super Eagles matches across the country in a bid to spread and reach the generality of Nigerians for better acceptability of the national team. Some of the cities where the Eagles have played competitive matches include Uyo, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, Kano, while the pendulum is set to swing to Asaba, the Delta State capital..
