The earlier report which stated that Chelsea FC of England defender, Ola Aina, has been dropped from the final list of Nigerian players for the 2018 World Cup, has been debunked by the Nigeria Football Federation.
The latest news according to our source in the football house is that the dream of the player of playing at the World Cup for Nigeria is close to fruition after he was included in Nigeria’s traveling party to the United Kingdom.
It is confirmed that Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has axed four players from the roster. The axed players include Kano Pillars striker Junior Lokosa, Standard Liege midfielder Uche Agbo, Lokomotiv Plovdiv defender Stephen Eze and Plateau United netminder Dele Ajiboye.
A fifth player Moses Simon will travel with the team to London in order to get a second opinion on his thigh injury, with tests carried out in Nigeria confirming that he will be on the sidelines for a minimum of three weeks.
Stephen Eze, the Lokomotiv Plovdiv defender Stephen Eze has expressed his disappointment after he was omitted from Nigeria’s World Cup roster set to be confirmed by the Nigeria Football Federation in the coming hours.
The player said on Twitter: ”Sadly, my journey to #WorldCup ends here. I am disappointed not to make the final squad, but I want to thank our coach and management for the opportunity. I wish my team the best and hope to join in celebrations when they bring the trophy home! GO #NIGERIA #DefendLikeEze”.
Rohr will drop two more players after Saturday’s friendly against England at Wembley, and the 23 players remaining will be his final squad for the World Cup.
Ola Aina is competing with Elderson Echiejile and Brian Idowu for two spots at left-back, and also vying for the right-back positions with Abdullahi Shehu and Tyronne Ebuehi.
The former England U-19 skipper earned his fourth Nigeria cap in their 1-1 draw with Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday, May 28.
