NWFL: Bayelsa Queens extends unbeaten run

Bayelsa Queens were held to a goalless draw by Rivers Angels at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa in match day five of the Nigeria Women Premier League decided in Yenagoa.
In a game of intrigues ‘The Restoration Girls’ impressed their home fans when they showed promises of emerging champions at the end of the season.
Bayelsa Queens came close to scoring in the early minutes when Sike Promise attempted a shot from her end, this was caught calmly by Rivers goalkeeper Tochukwu Oluehi to deny the Queens from taking the lead.
Rivers Angels responded when Yusuf Hannah drove in from the left flank but she was intercepted by Igbinovia Osamudiame
In the 21st minutes, Uzoamaka Igwe’s set-piece almost wrecked havoc for the ‘Jewel of Rivers’ but danger was averted when Mary Ologbosere cleared the ball off danger with a header.
Juliet Sunday connected brilliantly as she headed the ball inches wider than the target when she got a pass from Mabel Effiom through a corner kick. In the 56th minutes, Nwaora Favour came to the rescue of the Queens as she pulled a massive save to frustrate Sule Rafiat one-on-one opportunity to score.
Head Coach of Bayelsa Queens, Mike Ekpeyong, admitted that his side’s target was to win at home with the dream of qualifying for the next phase.
“We were expected to win at home, we did our best for not losing any match up till this time,” Ekpeyong said after the match.
“We played well, our target is to qualify for the Super Four which I am very confident of, since the win at home at all costs regime has not started in the NWPL. We are still hopeful of qualifying,” Ekpeyong stated.
Rivers Angels Head Coach, Edwin Okon, voiced his sentiments on the missed chances by his attackers.
“My mission here was to pick all three points and I rue the missed scoring opportunities which my players wasted. We would have been two to three goals up in the first half alone, but I thank God we still picked a point from this game, so I am happy with my team today,” the former Super Falcons coach stated.
