Liverpool legend compares Klopp to Shanks

An emotional Mark Lawrenson celebrated Liverpool reaching the club’s eighth Champions League final last night by comparing the Reds’ charismatic manager, Jurgen Klopp, to the legendary Bill Shankly.

Lawrenson played in the Liverpool side which defeated AS Roma in the Olympic Stadium in 1984 to win the club’s fourth European Cup – and he was back there last night to watch Klopp’s side reach the Reds’ eighth European Cup final in dramatic fashion.

After the 7-6 aggregate victory Lawrenson said: “He (Klopp) gets the history of the football club, he really gets the supporters and he knows generally it’s a working class football club.

“I loathe to compare people but there’s definitely so much of Shankly in him, there really seriously is.

“He’s a completely different version, but a modern day version of Shankly. “I’m not getting carried away because they’ve got to the final.

“It’s just the way that he is. He can operate people and get people on his side and it’s a really, really clever thing to do.”
